OUR MISSION

With the onset of COVID-19,  we cannot stand by and watch our Rohingya brothers and sisters suffer without attempting to help. The UN has described the Rohingya Muslims as “the world’s most persecuted minority”. Our mission is to bring awareness of this crisis to the US, as it has been buried from public and media attention. As the pandemic spreads, doctors are still struggling with extreme PPE shortages in an attempt to care for Rohingya, who themselves are malnourished and suffering from clean water shortages. We are especially passionate about the Rohingya as we heard about how the virus has already reached the Cox’s Bazar camp, the densest refugee settlement in the world. This makes social distancing practically impossible. In fact, according to the director of CARE, Ram Das, the density of the camps is almost eight times that of Wuhan, China, where the COVID-19 outbreak began.

Students4Rohingya will be leading workshops, seminars, and guest lectures in order to spread awareness of this issue. Our hope is that attendees will spread the word to their communities so that we can fundraise for the Rohingya. Through these donations, we aim to help provide health services, child protection, education, and safe shelter to these communities. A little goes a long way, and we are looking for highly motivated students to join our cause.

MEET THE FOUNDERS

Sarah and Safiya are both rising juniors at the University of Pennsylvania. They met at New Student Orientation and since then have become close friends. They are passionate about advocating for refugees and are involved in several refugee groups on campus. Safiya and Sarah noticed the lack of media coverage on the Rohingya and decided to create Students4Rohingya to raise awareness of the issue and fundraise in their own community.
